Web Design

Below are descriptions and links to some websites that I’ve built. As web site software has got easier to use, the tendency recently is for the site owners to maintain sites themselves and this is the case with most of the sites listed here. Recently I’ve concentrated on helping other photographers put their portfolios online. The CMT site is very old and could do with an overhaul.

Wimbledon College TheatreWimbledon College of Art - Degree Show Site
This site went live in May 2008. It uses Wordpress as a CMS (Content Management System) and a customized version of the Revolution theme. The site was mainly built to promote the degree show but will probably remain online for a couple of years. Using Wordpress means that it can be easily updated by the students if they need to change details. Click here to view more details on the Revolution Theme.
robert viglaskyRobert Viglasky Photography
This site uses Flash-based portfolios and a simple content management system so that Robert can easily add or change photos as well as edit the text on the site easily and without having to learn HTML or web design. He uses the site to promote his commercial, wedding and personal photography. The text can be edited by logging into the site and editing via a web browser. Images are uploaded or deleted via a simple FTP program.
Marshall Silburn Photographyurbandogz
The photography of Marshall Silburn. This site is based on the Wordpress blogging platform and also incorporates the ‘nextgen gallery’ plugin to organise photo galleries, making it easy for Marshall to blog and update the site himself.
Mario Mage PhotographyMario Magé
This site is mainly Flash-based but again, with a simple CMS (Content Management System) which makes it easy for Mario to change or add new pictures and edit the text and also ensures that the text is indexed by search engines. He is using the site to display his wedding, coporate, kids and pets photography. The text on the site is edited by logging in and editing in a browser window. Images are uploaded or deleted via the control panel provided by his web hosting company.
Quentin Ball PhotographyQuentin Ball Photography
This went live in Feb. 2006. It’s a relatively simple site promoting the Architectural, Landscape and Fine Art photography of Quentin Ball.
IMR logoInstitute of Musical Research
This site was designed to work within Typo3 (a Content Management System) so that the site owners can maintain and update it themselves. It went live in May 2006. To comply with the needs of web accessibility standards the design is achieved through the use of templates and CSS. It has a CSS style sheet switching option to give a high visibility view of the site. I was responsible for the overall design, colours, logo, etc., but not the photography.
WMCWholistic Medical Centre
The Wholistic Medical Centre web site launched in March ‘05. The approach is fairly clean and simple but there’s actually a lot of information on the site so it took quite a long time to implement and there are still some areas to be developed. I was responsible for the overall design, colours, logo, etc., but not the photography.
CMT buttonCabaret Mechanical Theatre
Aug. 1999. Star Site of the Month in Computer Buyer Magazine’s pick of online museums and galleries:“If, like our editor, you like the sound of a clockwork cat-kicker, this site’s for you. Based in London’s Covent Garden, the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre is a funny and absorbing collection of mechanical toys. At its web site, youngsters can learn about the basic engineering principles involved, and find out how to make their own. Attractive, well presented and easy to get around (with a host of handy links), this site’s a sure fire hit with boffins of the future (and cat haters).”

Cabaret Mechanical Theatre is a museum of automata (mechanical sculpture). They have movies and animations of the machines on the site. If you’re looking for sites on Automata, Animatronics, Androids, Robots, Puppets, etc., go straight to their links page. Otherwise, press the red button and have fun. Look out for the QTVR Object Movies and GIF animations in their on-line exhibition. Feb. 2001: added a new virtual exhibition with Flash animations.
