Silvertown

November 23, 2004

SilvertownAnother wander with Jawed and Jiri, who suggested we go to Silvertown. Strange place, probably waiting to be demolished. This picture was taken outside the Tate and Lyle refinery. We ended the day at the UK premiere of Eggleston’s Stranded in Canton. I wanted to enjoy it but it was too much like watching home movies. In fairness, most people seemed to be clapping enthusiastically when it finished so maybe I dozed off one time too many.

Game

October 19, 2004

GameI gave up using a Palm Pilot some years ago, in favour of storing contacts in my phone but I have relapsed and bought a Zire 72. It’s a major distraction, hopefully only temporarily, as long as I can avoid downloading games. I don’t seem to play games anymore. Remember Laurie Anderson’s Puppet Motel? Is anyone making things like that at the moment?

Acceptable Levels

October 7, 2004

CityIt seems a bit weak to admit needing YASHB (Yet Another Self-help Book) but I’m getting fed up with my own procrastination. I’ve got a video to finish which is just taking up hard disk space and at least two books of photographs I want to make. And, as Harry Hill says, “You’ve got to have a system”.

So this book wouldn’t have jumped off the shelf at me but reading 43 Folders has convinced me. Expect big things.

Not this week of course - I’m a bit busy.

London Open House

September 18, 2004

Grove LaneFor the previous two years on London Open House weekend I’ve intended to visit the William Booth College but never quite managed it. Mainly I wanted to try the view from the tower but because the site covers a large area and is surrounded by high walls it also has an air of mystery.

On the way I noticed another building that was in the Open House scheme. I hadn’t seen it on the LOH web site because it’s described as ‘Stealth House’. This picture was taken inside (more information on the architect’s site - click on What’s New and Grove Lane). For a view I shot from the William Booth College tower, click here. Apart from the view it was all very austere and not at all mysterious.

Hard Hat Zone

Hard HatsLast weekend I spent some time in the Malvern Hills taking terrible landscape pictures. Fortunately we also managed to squeeze in a day trip to Birmingham for some proper pictures of rubbish, building sites, etc., including this one.

Independent

September 13, 2004

Top ShopI had a photo in The Independent on Friday (they don’t seem to cover art reviews on their web site, so no link). It was a picture of one of Paul Spooner’s Butcher’s Shops. There was also an article on this in last Sunday’s Observer (more info).
