Tailored, one-to-one training / tuition

Someone who needs one-to-one, hands on tuition in Adobe Photoshop or Photography. Perhaps a Photographer (maybe you need help understanding your new digital SLR camera), or an Artist / Designer who needs a skill update. It's helpful if you have basic computer skills but as a tutor, I am used to starting from scratch. You may need a general introduction or something very specific but either way you probably want something other than group training or self-tuition. One-to-one, hands-on training is particularly suited to visually-minded people who prefer to be shown how to do things and may find it difficult to work through manuals. I can also provide longer term mentoring for Photographers. |

I am a photographer based in S.E. London and have been a regular Visiting Lecturer / tutor at Wimbledon College of Art since 1997. As well as introducing software to groups of BA students I also do a lot of 1-to-1 tuition. For the last year I've also been teaching a 'Starting Digital Photography' course for Photofusion. You can see the kind of photography I do on the rest of this site. As well as the personal and street photography, you can also see some professional work: interiors and staff photography on the Rules restaurant web site and small object / sculpture photography on the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre web site. As well as using digital cameras, I also process and scan medium format film. There is more background on my Biography page. |

£140 for a 3 hour session. If you want to plan a longer, customised course of lessons I am happy to discuss your requirements. I don't mind travelling to you but I may need to cover some of the time and travel depending on the length of the session. I prefer to work on weekdays during normal working hours (not weekends or evenings). Please use the form or e-mail link below to get in touch.

“I bought a digital SLR camera this summer, in anticipation of a big holiday my husband and I were set to go on. Because I hadn't touched an SLR in fifteen years, I didn't have a clue what to do with it. Instead of attempting to read the manual and hunt around on the web for answers to questions much more easily answered in person, I gave Gary a call and arranged a meeting. In the hour we spent together, he patiently explained everything from white balance to aperture to what all the letters meant on the dial of my camera. Before I came to him, I found my camera daunting and esoteric; by the time I left, I was excited to start experimenting. His understanding and demonstration were really invaluable.” - Beth |

“Gary is a thorough and patient teacher. I arrived knowing precisely nothing about Photoshop, and very little about the technical aspects of Photography. Gary teaches in a way that allows for a quick conceptual grasping of the language of both. After just two days, I left feeling confident and excited about furthering my practice in both fields.” - Nicola
